You Don't Believe Plants Will Die?/

Suppose you have a pothos plant. You place it in a corner with no window, no sunlight, and nobody remembers to water it. Three weeks later, it's dead.

Whether you believe in feng shui or not, it dies.

Because this is physics, not belief. Light, water, ventilation, temperature—these are hard conditions for plant survival. They have nothing to do with your belief system.

So what is "plant-based feng shui" actually about?

If someone tells you "this pothos placed here will attract wealth," that's nonsense. But if you're willing to rephrase the question, the answer might look different.

That dying pothos in the southwest corner of your office isn't there because the "feng shui is bad." It's there because it's been standing against a wall with zero natural light for three months, and you've walked past it eight times a day without once stopping to water it.

That plant is telling you something: how disconnected you are from your own workspace.

That dying pothos isn't a wealth indicator. It's a mirror of your attention to your daily environment.

You don't need to "believe" in anything to read this signal. You just need to be willing to look down.

Football coaches adjusting player positions on the pitch probably don't know that the I Ching has concepts called "shi" (momentum) and "wei" (position).

But what they're doing is essentially the same. A good coach doesn't just look at formations—4-4-2 or 3-5-2—but at players' actual positions and movement tendencies within the system. Some players thrive on the left flank and feel awkward on the right. Some flourish in a high-press system and disappear in a counter-attacking setup.

"Shi" is the directional energy the environment provides to the individual. "Wei" is the individual's specific coordinates within that environment. Put the right person in the right position, and the entire system runs more efficiently.

Plant-based feng shui uses plants as environmental sensors.

Plants are exquisitely sensitive to their surroundings. Not enough light, leaves yellow. Poor ventilation, leaf tips dry out. Temperature swings too much, leaves drop. Too much water, roots rot. Too little, the plant wilts. Using a single plant's condition, you can assess whether a space's physical conditions support life.

That mint thriving on your balcony means that corner's light and ventilation happen to suit it.

That money tree with yellowing leaves in your office—no matter how much you like it—that spot genuinely doesn't work for it.

This isn't mysticism. This is training your environmental sensitivity. Plants are simply the cheapest sensors available. A pothos costs a few dollars and is more intuitive than any air quality monitor.

If you can't notice whether a plant in your space is thriving or dying, you probably can't notice how you yourself feel in that space either. And if you can't notice how you feel in a space, every decision you make about that space is likely blind.

Plant-based feng shui doesn't teach you to place plants at an "auspicious position." It teaches you to look—to see what your space is telling you.

If you're willing to start noticing the plants in your space, maybe start with one corner. Not with belief.
