Why does it take three years to truly "master" how to perform divination using the I Ching? Perhaps you started learning it incorrectly from the very beginning/學易經三年才"會"起卦?可能是你一開始就學錯了

Three Years to Learn I-Ching Casting? You Might Be Starting Wrong

A student asked me: "Wen Laoshi, does it take three to five years to learn I-Ching casting?"

I said: "Can you flip a coin right now?"

He paused. "Yes."

"Can three flips give you a yin or yang line?"

"I guess... if I check a table."

"Six flips build one hexagram. Operationally, you already know how to cast."

Casting takes five minutes. What you can't learn in five minutes is reading the result.

That gap is roughly why you've bought three I-Ching books, taken two courses, and still feel like you've learned nothing.

The Reversal

Most people quit not because they're slow, but because they started in the wrong order. Buy book → open page one → see eight symbols → memorize → forget by hexagram twelve → decide they're not cut out for it.

It looks like a memory problem. It's actually a sequencing problem.

In the Ming dynasty, a scholar named Lai Zhide spent thirty years studying I-Ching and distilled his insight into a sixteen-character formula. His student Li Zhi had memorized hexagrams for six months and still needed half an hour to look up a single reading. After learning the formula, Li Zhi understood all 64 hexagram transformations in three days.

Not because Li Zhi was slow before. Because he was memorizing vocabulary without learning grammar.

The 64 hexagrams aren't 64 separate things. They're 8 basic elements combined in pairs—like a multiplication table. You don't memorize all 81 entries. You learn the rule.

Cross-Domain Example

A friend learning Japanese spent year one memorizing 20,000 words. Passed exams barely. Year two, he switched methods—learned grammar structure first, then hung vocabulary on that framework. Reading speed tripled in six months.

He said: "I thought my memory was the problem. Turned out I lacked a framework."

Same with I-Ching. The 64 hexagrams are the vocabulary. The eight trigrams are the syllabary. Yin and yang are grammar.

Closure

So "how long to learn casting" depends on how you define "can."

If "can" means flipping coins and looking up the hexagram—five minutes.

If "can" means reading what a hexagram says about your situation—one or two months of serious study.

If "can" means reading hexagrams like a seasoned practitioner—that's ten years.

Most people get stuck at step one. Not because step three is too far. Because they signed up for a marathon before learning to walk.
