When You're Stuck on Quitting, One I-Ching Hexagram Can Show You Where You Stand/

In the previous post, we said the hardest part of quitting is not courage but clarity. Yet after walking through all seven questions, many people still tell me — "Wen Laoshi, I know the answer, but I just can't settle it in my heart." That sentence — "I can't settle it" — is exactly what the I-Ching was designed to handle. Three thousand years ago, our ancestors invented this method for that same hesitation: not to make the decision for you, but to help you see where you're standing right now.
1. Why Quitting Fits the I-Ching So Well
Quitting is a classic "incomplete-information plus overloaded-emotion" decision. Rational analysis has already stalled — pros and cons are on paper, and you're still awake at 2 a.m. What blocks you at that hour is not data, but an intuition you can't fully verbalize. The I-Ching's job is exactly this — it takes that vague inner "what do I really want" and gives it a shape, in the form of a hexagram. You are not asking heaven for a verdict; you are giving your own intuition a mirror.
Using the I-Ching for career decision is, at its core, a structured self-dialogue. Across three thousand years, few major moves in history were made without first consulting one hexagram.
2. From "Think It Through" to "See It Clearly" — Four Steps to Cast a Hexagram
Using the I-Ching to help with a quitting decision takes only four steps —
1. Phrase the question clearly: not "should I quit," but "if I stay in this role for one more year, does the overall growth outweigh the cost, or the other way around?" The more specific the question, the sharper the hexagram.
2. Cast in stillness: three coins, tossed six times, record each line yin or yang from bottom to top.
3. Read the primary and derived hexagrams: the primary is where you stand now, the derived is where you will arrive if you keep going.
4. Read the changing lines: they mark the pivot points — usually the exact variable that decides "leave or stay."
By the end of the process, you'll notice — it isn't the I-Ching that gave you the answer, it's you, walking yourself through it.
3. A Real Case: A Student's Hexagram 44
Last autumn, a student who had spent seven years at a major tech company came to me with the question: "Should I accept a founding-partner offer from a startup?" He cast Hexagram 44 · Gou (Coupling), with a changing line at the bottom.
Gou is about "encounter," but its bottom line says "tied to a brake" — meaning "at a pivotal moment, hold the brake, don't rush in." He sat in silence for a while and said, "I was carried away by the offer. I hadn't thought through the equity terms or the exit clause." Three months later, he renegotiated the contract before actually leaving. Today his startup is thriving, and he often tells me — that hexagram didn't tell him to stay, it told him to leave more steadily.
The I-Ching never decides for you. It only asks you to pause the impulse and look once more.
