What Is I-Ching? A 3,000-Year-Old Book That Talks About Only One Thing

As a kid I walked a dirt path home from school every day. Beside it ran a river.

The river never stopped. Rain swelled it, drought shrank it, winter froze it, spring thawed it. Always changing.

But the river never hesitated. It never stood before a rock asking "left or right?" It reached the rock, split, went around, rejoined.

Years later I read the I-Ching and realized: that's exactly what the ancients were writing about—

Change isn't the problem. Change is the default setting.

Most people think I-Ching predicts the future. It looks like it does. It doesn't.

I-Ching teaches you how to coexist with change.

64 hexagrams, each describing a "state of ongoing change." Some just starting, some ending, some stuck mid-shift, some irreversible.

Not one hexagram says "this change will last forever."

Because it knows: all change will change again.

(A confession) Before 30 I read I-Ching looking for answers: "Will this succeed?" "Is this person worth waiting for?"

Couldn't find them. Not because the book failed. Because I asked the wrong questions.

I-Ching doesn't answer "what will happen." It answers "what pattern of change are you experiencing, and how has this pattern historically unfolded."

Big difference. One gives certainty. The other gives clarity.

Can't be certain. But once clear, you know how to move.

Heraclitus said 2,500 years ago: "You cannot step into the same river twice."

Same time, same conclusion across continents—everything flows, nothing stays.

Later the West developed the second law of thermodynamics—entropy always increases. Translation: change is the only constant.

The book's own title is the answer. Not "Book of Prediction." Not "Book of Fortune." Book of Changes.

The first word tells you what it does—not predict, not control, but accept change, understand change, find your rhythm within it.

Next time someone asks "what does I-Ching teach," try: a 3,000-year-old book that talks about one word—change.

Not to fear it. To know change is normal.

Not to predict it. To learn to stand steady within it.

Book of Changes.
