What Is I-Ching? A Boss 3,000 Years Ago Carved His Decision Logic on Bamboo Sticks

How many chat groups on your phone? Work, family, food delivery, neighborhood HOA. Each one pings 30+ times a day. Every message is a micro-decision—reply now, reply how, or wait 30 minutes.

In 2026 you make more decisions daily than your grandfather did in a lifetime.

Then someone says: "Read the I-Ching, 3,000 years old. It helps you decide."

Your first thought: you're joking.

Most people think I-Ching is fortune-telling. It looks like one. It isn't.

The I-Ching is a decision framework the ancients built for themselves. What it does is identical to SWOT analysis or game theory in a modern MBA class—helping you find an actionable entry point when information is incomplete.

The only difference is form. MBA uses spreadsheets. I-Ching uses six bamboo sticks.

Ancients used sticks as a mirror—not for their face, but for what kind of situation they were in. The 64 hexagrams are 64 situation models. You don't memorize all 64. You just need to know which model you're currently inside.

(A confession) I thought I-Ching was fortune-telling too. In college I flipped two pages, saw "auspicious, inauspicious, regret, shame," and closed the book. Ten years of consulting later I realized those four words aren't about luck—they're four possible outcomes after a decision.

Auspicious = right call, smooth ahead.

Inauspicious = against the trend, you'll hit a wall.

Regret = small error, fixable.

Shame = small error, unfixable, will drag.

Four words. A decision review form. The product managers of 3,000 years ago were thorough.

Ray Dalio runs one of the world's largest hedge funds. He did something logically identical—wrote 200+ principles matching every market situation to a decision rule. He said: "If you don't write down your decision logic, you'll never know how you decide, and you'll never improve."

The I-Ching is the same thing, just carved on bamboo. Dalio wrote PDF. Ancients wrote line texts. Different tool, identical logic.

Next time someone says "I-Ching is superstition," ask: have you ever written down your decision logic and reviewed it?

Book a decision consultation—40 minutes, find your current situation model.
