A friend said: "I want to learn feng shui. But I heard it takes years—luopan compasses, flying stars, qi calculations..."
I said: "Which way does your balcony face?"
"South."
"What's on it?"
"Some pothos plants. And a cactus that's almost dead."
"A cactus on a south-facing balcony gets too much sun. That's why it's dying. The pothos in partial shade is thriving."
"What does that have to do with feng shui?"
"That IS feng shui. You've already been observing the relationship between space and environment. You just didn't know it had a name."
Feng shui isn't knowledge from books. It's the perception your body has been sensing but you haven't been paying attention to.

The Reversal
Most feng shui courses start with compass techniques, flying star calculations, directional formulas.
Sounds professional. Actually overcomplicates the simplest thing.
What's the core of feng shui? How a space makes you feel.
You walk into a room and feel suffocated. Not because you don't understand feng shui. Because your body tells you: poor ventilation, insufficient light, too few plants.
You walk into another room and feel relaxed. Same reason—your body tells you: open space, natural light, greenery, smooth airflow.
What a feng shui master does and what you do the moment you enter a room are essentially the same—perceiving the environment.
The only difference is they can articulate that perception with terminology.
Cross-Domain Example
Japan has garden designs called karesansui—dry landscape. No water, no real trees. Only white sand, stones, moss.
But people walking in universally feel "calm."
Why? Because minimal elements create a sense of spaciousness. Your eyes don't chase too many things. Your breathing naturally slows.
That's not mysticism. That's the human nervous system's basic response to space.
Plant feng shui works the same way. Not "place lucky bamboo in the east, money tree in the west." It helps you notice—why does your living room always make you tired? Maybe not bad feng shui. Maybe one plant is blocking the only airflow path.
Closure
So "how long to learn feng shui"—reframed:
You're already using it. You just haven't taken it seriously.
From "noticing" to "articulating" might take a month or two. From "articulating" to "adjusting accurately" needs lots of practice.
But you don't need to wait until you've "finished learning" to start feeling your home. Your home has been talking to you all along.
