Once You Learn I-Ching, Do You Stop Making Your Own Decisions?/

Someone asked me: "Wen Laoshi, if I learn I-Ching, do I need to cast a hexagram before every decision?"
I said: "Wouldn't you get tired?"
He agreed. Tiring.
"Then what do you think learning I-Ching is for?"
"Making... more accurate decisions?"
"No. Making decisions more quietly."
I-Ching doesn't decide for you. It helps you turn down the noise in your head.

The Reversal
Most people learn things to be "faster." Faster decisions, faster answers, faster solutions.
I-Ching teaches the opposite.
One hexagram is called Xu—Waiting. The judgment reads: sincerity brings bright success, favorable to cross the great river.
In plain language: your direction is fine. But you can't rush.
Sounds like common sense today. Who doesn't know "don't rush"?
But between "knowing not to rush" and "actually being able to wait," there's a canyon.
I-Ching doesn't tell you "don't rush." It uses six lines to show you: what stage you're in. What that stage's nature is. What you need to do—and don't need to do.
Not an answer. A map.
With a map, you don't ask others which way to go. You see clearly yourself.
Cross-Domain Example
In his later years, Confucius loved reading I-Ching. According to Records of the Grand Historian, he read it so much the leather binding of his bamboo scroll broke three times.
Confucius was one of the smartest people of his era. Did he need to reread a divination book?
Not learning "how to cast." He was reading a way of seeing the world.
I-Ching's philosophical core is three ideas: change is constant, the pattern behind change is simple, some things don't change.
You can memorize these in five minutes. But it takes a lifetime to embody them.
How long to learn I-Ching? If "learn" means "memorize"—one day. If "learn" means "live it"—a lifetime.
Closure
So the final answer to "how long to learn casting":
Casting is easy. What's hard was never the casting.
What's hard is: after you cast, can you sit quietly and think about what the hexagram is saying—and what you're truly thinking?
The moment those two things align—that's when you "know how."
