Is I-Ching Same as Fortune-Telling? Your Living Room Has Nothing to Do with Fortune-Telling, But Everything to Do with Attention

An interior designer client asked me on first meeting: "Wen Laoshi, isn't feng shui just fortune-telling in a different costume?"

I asked: "How many apartments have you designed?"

She said: "Over 200."

"Have you noticed some apartments feel great when you walk in, and others make you want to leave quickly?"

She nodded. "Of course. But that's spatial sense, lighting, traffic flow—not feng shui."

I said: "Those words you used—spatial sense, lighting, traffic flow—are the exact same things feng shui studies. Just with 3,000-year-old vocabulary instead of 2026 vocabulary."

She was quiet for a moment. "So feng shui isn't mysticism?"

"Feng shui isn't mysticism. Feng shui is the ancient terminology for spatial design. Fortune-tellers borrowed it and ruined the reputation."

Most people think feng shui is: which direction your door faces, where your bed points, where the stove sits.

It looks like spatial rules. It isn't.

Feng shui doesn't actually look at compass directions. It looks at how your attention flows through your space.

Entryway piled with delivery boxes—your attention gets consumed by "clutter" before you even sit down. Your brain has already made 20 micro-decisions before you've unpacked.

A healthy plant in your living room—your gaze lands on the leaves, attention shifts from scattered to focused. Your brain automatically switches to low-power mode.

Not mysticism. Attention science.

(A confession) I used to think feng shui was just "the art of placing things." Then one day I cleaned my studio for an afternoon, and the next day made one of the clearest decisions I'd made in months. I wasn't cleaning a room. I was cleaning my brain's attention environment.

Google's workspace design team has an internal principle: every workstation must have natural elements within its sight line. Not superstition. Data. Their own research found employees with greenery in view took 15% fewer sick days, scored 12% higher on creativity.

That's the same thing as feng shui saying "wood near the dwelling gathers qi"—just one uses fMRI data, the other uses the concept of qi.
