1. Five Files on a Wednesday Afternoon

Wednesday, 3 pm. Five vendor quotes spread across your desk. You read the fourth, forget the first. Read the first again, start doubting the third.

Colleague walks past: Decided yet?

Still looking.

An hour later: Decided?

Still looking.

You're not deciding once. You're making the same decision 40 times.

You think you need more information.

What you need is to put your hands down first.

2. Three Moves That Look Like Thinking but Are Really Just Spinning

Move A: Re-read all the materials.

By the third read, you're not reading. You're hunting for a reason not to decide.

Move B: Ask one more person.

You've asked four. The fifth won't give you an answer you haven't already heard. You're just looking for someone else to press the button.

Move C: Google "how to choose XX."

150,000 results. Your problem shifts from "which one" to "read all 150,000 first, then choose."

One line:

Hexagram 52 in the I-Ching is called Gen — Mountain over Mountain. The whole hexagram is about one action: stopping.

The ancients used two mountains not to say humans should become mountains, but to say — right now, you need to stand still like one.

Gen means stop. When it's time to stop, stop. When it's time to move, move.

Not "give up." Just put your hands down long enough for your mind to catch up.

3. The Whiteboard in Steve Jobs's Office

A well-known scene: weeks before the 2007 iPhone launch, Steve Jobs's office whiteboard held 11 desktop prototypes.

He stood in front of it for a long time, walked over, and wiped 8 off.

Three remained.

The next day, the team worked on those three.

What shipped was the simplest one.

Jobs later said: "Focus is about saying no."

He didn't pick one design. He killed ten.

People with many options move too much. People who decide well stop first.

4. One Line: Stop First, Then Look

Gen isn't about being passive.

Gen is about — when your hands keep moving, your eyes can't catch up with your heart.

Cutting 5 options to 3 isn't a filtering technique. It's 30 seconds of stopping.

Focus is about saying no."
