Can I-Ching Help Decisions? 64 Squares—Which One Are You In?

A data analyst client came in on our first meeting completely blunt: "Wen Laoshi, no mysticism please. Just tell me—does this system have actual logic?"

I said yes.

"What kind?"

"Classification logic. Six lines, each with two possible states—broken or solid. Six layers stacked together, two to the sixth power, exactly 64 combinations. 64 combinations equal 64 basic situation types. Your current predicament almost certainly falls into one of them."

He thought for a moment. "Isn't that just a decision tree?"

"Essentially the same idea. Except this decision tree was planted 3,000 years ago. Every single square has been walked through by countless people before you. Their accumulated experience is recorded in the line texts."

Most people see hexagrams and assume they predict the future.

They don't. Hexagrams function as a situation classification table. Think of hospital triage—the system first determines which department you need, then applies that department's accumulated historical experience to your case.

Qian means all conditions are rising, so move with momentum.

Kun means the larger picture is already set, your role is to carry and execute.

Zhun means beginnings are always difficult, so build foundations before making moves.

(A confession) I used to tell clients "this hexagram will bring you this outcome." Until one client stopped me: "Are you fortune-telling or analyzing?"

The honest answer: analyzing—determining which pattern you're currently in. What happens next comes from the historical data of that pattern, not from my opinion.

Carl Jung noticed the same thing. He wrote that I-Ching describes synchronicity—the moment you ask your question and the moment the hexagram appears share the same underlying meaning structure.

Translation: your question already contains part of the answer. The hexagram simply reveals which pattern it belongs to.

What took Jung a lifetime of research, I-Ching solved 3,000 years ago with 64 squares.
