Can I-Ching Help Decisions? 3,000 Years Ago, a Prisoner Figured This Out
11th century BCE. A man named Ji Chang sat in a prison called Youli.
He was the leader of the Zhou tribe. King Zhou of Shang considered him too threatening and locked him away—no trial, no sentence length, nothing.
In that cell he did one thing: he reorganized the existing hexagrams, arranged them in sequence, and wrote commentary for each one.
History later honored him as King Wen of Zhou. The work became the Zhou Yi—the I-Ching as we know it.
A man with no information, no resources, nothing he could control. The only thing left was thinking clearly about how things change.

Most people want I-Ching to answer one question: will this succeed?
That's the wrong question entirely.
I-Ching answers: "what pattern of change are you currently experiencing?"
Ask "will it work"—you hand all control to an external verdict. That's binary logic. You become passive, waiting for yes or no.
Ask "what pattern am I in"—your attention returns to yourself. You observe the situation, judge whether to advance or wait, decide whether to push or retreat. That's dynamic logic.
One approach waits for answers. The other sees clearly, then moves.
(A confession) Before I turned 30, every question I asked the I-Ching was "will it work?" Every reading that came back "not great" made me anxious. Later I finally understood—my question framing was creating the anxiety, not the book itself.
Heraclitus said 2,500 years ago: "You cannot step into the same river twice." Because the river changes, and so do you.
Same era, opposite ends of the earth, two completely isolated civilizations reached the same conclusion: everything changes, nothing stays fixed.
The book's own name is the answer. Not "Book of Prediction." Not "Book of Fortune." Book of Changes.
Can I-Ching help decisions? Not by giving answers. By helping you accept that no certain answers exist. Then in that uncertainty, you see the next step more clearly.
