Is I-Ching Same as Fortune-Telling? 64 Squares Aren't Prophecies—They're Health Reports

A computer science client once asked me: "Wen Laoshi, can you cast a hexagram and tell me if I'll get promoted this year?"

I said: "I can't tell you whether you'll get promoted. But I can tell you which square you're standing in right now."

He paused. "What does that mean?"

"The 64 hexagrams are like 64 health indicators. You don't come in asking 'will I get sick?' You check which indicators are running high, then adjust your lifestyle."

He thought for five seconds. "So what you're doing is analysis, not prediction?"

"Exactly. Fortune-telling predicts. I-Ching analyzes. Prediction tells you what will happen. Analysis tells you what state you're in now—then you decide how to move."

Most people think hexagrams are saying: here's what will happen next.

They aren't. Hexagrams say: here's where you are, here's what the surrounding terrain looks like.

Like opening a navigation app. It doesn't tell you "you will definitely arrive." It says "here's which road you're on, there's a jam ahead, consider another route."

64 hexagrams = 64 terrain types. Qian is open plain—great visibility, fast running, but watch your direction. Kun is a basin—stable, but requires patience, don't rush uphill.

(A confession) I used to make the same mistake—clients asked "what does this hexagram mean?" and I'd say "here's how it ends." Clients always felt more anxious afterward. Because I was writing their script, and they couldn't control the script's ending.

So I changed my phrasing: "You're in this terrain. Check your resources. Think about which direction costs the least energy."

They stopped feeling anxious.

Sun Tzu did the same thing. He didn't predict what the enemy would do tomorrow. He said "know yourself, know your opponent"—understand where you stand, understand where the opposition stands, then judge "what terrain is this battle on, how should it be fought?"

Same underlying logic: don't predict the future. Analyze the present.

有一次一個學電腦的客戶來找我。

他說：「聞老師，我聽說易經能算卦。你能不能給我算一下，我今年能不能升職？」

我說：「我不能告訴你能不能升職。但我可以告訴你，你現在在哪一格。」

他愣了一下：「什麼意思？」

我說：「六十四卦就像 64 個體檢指標。你不是來問'我會不會生病'——你是來看哪幾項指標偏高，然後決定怎麼調整生活方式。」

他想了 5 秒，說：「所以你做的是分析，不是預測？」

我說：「對。算命是預測。易經是分析。預測說你會怎樣。分析說你現在是什麼狀態，然後你自己決定怎麼走。」

他點點頭：「這個我能接受。」

反轉 · 卦象不是劇本，是**地圖**

多數人以為卦象在說：你接下來會遇到什麼。

看起來像是。其實不是。

卦象說的是：你現在在哪里，你周圍的形勢是什麼。

就好像你打開導航。導航不會告訴你"你一定會到達目的地"。它告訴你的是"你在哪條路上，前面堵不堵，要不要換條路"。

64 卦就是 64 種地形。乾卦是開闊平原——視野好，跑得快，但你得注意別跑偏。坤卦是盆地——穩，但你需要耐心，別急著爬坡。

（較真式自嘲）我以前也老犯一個錯。客戶問"這卦什麼意思"，我就忍不住說"這事最後會怎樣"。後來發現客戶聽完更焦慮了——因為我等於在替他寫劇本，而他沒法控制劇本的走向。

後來我改了說法：「你現在在這片地形裏。看看你手裏有什麼資源。想想往哪個方向走最省力。」

客戶反而不焦慮了。

因為地圖和劇本的區別就在這裏——劇本你只能看。地圖你可以用。

跨界 · 孫子兵法也幹過同一件事

孫子不預測敵人明天幹什麼。

他說的是「知己知彼」——知道自己在哪，知道對手在哪，然後判斷"這場仗在什麼地形上打，該怎麼打"。

跟易經的底層邏輯一模一樣：不預測未來，分析當下。

算命的邏輯是"告訴我結局"。易經的邏輯是"告訴我局勢"。

一個是被動的。一個是主動的。
