A German's Surprise in 1703/一個德國人在1703年的驚喜

In 1703, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz published a paper. The title was characteristically long. Its essence: he had used his newly invented binary arithmetic to explain an ancient divination method.

That "ancient divination method" was the I Ching's sixty-four hexagrams. Each hexagram consists of six lines—either unbroken (yang) or broken (yin). Unbroken lines correspond to 1, broken lines to 0. When a Jesuit missionary named Bouvet sent Leibniz a diagram of the sixty-four hexagrams arranged by the Chinese scholar Shao Yong, Leibniz saw his own mathematical system—quietly arranged in a way he never expected.

The man who co-invented calculus (and spent decades quarreling with Newton about it) probably experienced something peculiar standing before a Chinese hexagram chart.

But he did something noteworthy. He didn't write a paper proving the I Ching was "right." He didn't write one proving it was "wrong." What he did was closer to this: a mathematician recognized the reflection of his own thinking in another civilization's symbolic system.

This has little to do with belief.

A 17th-century German mathematician and a legendary ancient Chinese sage, in completely different cultural contexts, each arrived at a complete coding system built from two symbols. Does this mean they "believed" in the same thing?

That's too hasty. A more reasonable conclusion: humans facing certain structural problems in a complex world may share similar simplification paths.

Meteorologists would recognize this terrain. Chaos theory's core finding: even with complete initial data for the atmosphere, you cannot precisely predict weather three months out. Not because of insufficient computing power. Because the system itself is exquisitely sensitive to initial conditions—the famous "butterfly effect." This doesn't mean weather forecasting is useless. It means precise long-range prediction is impossible in principle.

The hexagram system addresses exactly this type of problem. It doesn't try to give you a certain answer. It tries to describe a situation's "force field"—which forces are rising, which are fading, which positions are advantageous, which are dangerous.

Same logic as a weather forecast saying "60% chance of rain this week." Not prophecy—a situation map.

You don't need to believe a situation map has a soul to benefit from it. You only need to acknowledge: when information is incomplete, a map that marks the main variables beats going in empty-handed.

Six lines are not a code. They're a classification method using two symbols to exhaustively catalog situation types. Yang and yin simply mean "present" and "absent." Six layers stacked, sixty-four combinations, sixty-four basic situation types. You can call it crude, but it at least provides a starting point—figure out what kind of situation you're facing, then decide how to act.

Leibniz didn't convert to Eastern mysticism because he found a correspondence between binary and hexagrams. He continued doing mathematics. But that hexagram chart probably told him something: useful things don't require your faith. You just need to recognize their value.

但他做了一件值得注意的事。他沒有寫文章證明"易經是對的"。也沒有寫文章證明"易經是錯的"。他做的事情更接近於:一個數學家在另一個文明的符號系統裏,認出了自己思維的倒影。

這件事和"信不信"沒什麼關係。

一個17世紀的德國數學家和一個傳說中的中國上古聖人,在完全不同的文化背景下,各自抵達了一種由陰陽兩種符號排列組合而成的完整編碼系統。這說明什麼?說明他們"信"了同一個東西?

這個推論太草率了。更合理的說法是:人類面對複雜世界的某些結構性問題,可能共用著相似的簡化路徑。

氣象學家對此應該不陌生。

混沌理論有個核心發現:即使你掌握了大氣層的所有初始數據,也無法精確預測三個月後的天氣。不是因為計算能力不夠。是因為系統本身對初始條件極端敏感——所謂"蝴蝶效應"。這不是說天氣預報沒用。而是說,精確的長期預測在原理上就不可能。

卦象系統處理的,恰好也是這類問題。它不試圖給你一個確定答案,而是試圖描述一個處境的"力場"——哪些力量在上升,哪些在消退,哪些位置有利,哪些位置危險。

和天氣預報說"本周降雨概率六"是一回事。不是預言,是態勢地圖。

你拿著一張態勢地圖去開會,不需要相信地圖有靈魂才能從中獲益。你只需要承認:在資訊不完備的情況下,一張標注了主要變數的地圖,比你空著手強。

六爻不是密碼。它是一套用兩種符號窮舉處境類型的分類法。陽爻和陰爻,就是"有"和"無"。六層疊加,六十四個組合,六十四種基本處境。你可以說它粗糙,但它至少提供了一個出發點——先搞清楚你現在面對的是哪種處境,再決定怎麼動手。

萊布尼茨沒有因為發現了二進位和卦象的對應關係就皈依了東方神秘主義。他繼續做他的數學。但那幅卦圖大概讓他明白了一件事:有用的東西不需要你信仰。你只需要認得出它的價值。
